There is a ceiling in South Portland that still has a dent in it from Jeff Schools' head. It happened after celebrating Dave Henderson's home run off Donnie Moore in 1986, and while many may say that would explain a lot, it also shows his passion for sports. Although many may think his obsession with 80's rock is a little unnatural, he has, in a short time, forged many contacts and friends in the world of sports. He has cut his teeth on community radio in Standish, is the Associate Editor at The CMSB, where he has conducted many interviews for the CMSB's podcasts, so he has worn many different hats. Whether bringing back the history of the Maine Guides and Maine Mariners into the forefront of Maine sports, talking to “Spaceman” Bill Lee about the Montreal Expos, covering the Boston Bruins, or interacting with callers, Jeff has been able to graduate from frequent Big Jab caller to on-air host. It is rumored he was the caller who caused the late, great Frank Fixaris to drop his infamous “BS” sound bite back in the day, but this is neither confirmed nor denied. You can catch him Saturday mornings on “The Big Jab Weekend Warm-Up” from 8a-11a with Matt Boutwell. You can read and hear more from him at The CMSB.com
The first sports memory Matt Boutwell has is of William “Refrigerator” Perry crashing into the end zone against a beat-up and beaten down Patriots team in Super Bowl XX. It helped create an attitude of sarcasm and negativity that he still carries with him to this day. He grew up without cable, yet still managed to know more than the other kids at school because of the magic of AM radio. Listening to sports talk stations in New York, Philadelphia, Chicago, and Boston, he spent many nights falling asleep to the vocal stylings of the late Harry Kalas calling Phillies games and to Chuck Kaiton calling the Hartford Whaler games, and he carried this love of sports and radio with him for years. After spending 3 years in the military in the late 90's, he moved back to Maine and became a daily caller to “The Morning Jab” where he would frequently debate Shoe, Fix and later Joe on the topics of the day. He created a blog in 2005 that in 2008 became the “Central Maine Sports Blog”, and along with Jeff Schools, refocused the blog on local and New England sports with live game coverage, photos, audio interviews, podcasts and more. He has booked and interviewed Herm Edwards, Greg Gumbel, Jerry Sichting, ESPN draft guru Mel Kiper, Justin Masterson, ESPN senior writer Buster Olney, and former Cy Young Winner Dr. Mike Marshall. Blogging (and luck) got him a job as the Sports Editor for Independent Publishing in Windham and as a freelance contributor to “The Sportscaster”. The CMSB has been featured on the websites of USA Today, Deadspin, Sports Illustrated, FoxSports.com, and the podcast was simulcast on community radio here in Maine. He now brings the same great outlooks on sports and sports media to the Big Jab airwaves and to the Big Jab's website. You can hear him alongside Jeff Schools on “The Big Jab Weekend Warm-Up” Saturday mornings from 8-11a.
